Thought I'd post some images here from my portfolio.  I'll try to keep things mostly game related.  You can see more at my website: izzyaminov

Thanks.

Starting work on a new game with Grozzler.  This is a test track, and will have different scenes once we get some prototyping done.

I'm trying out making some tutorials, specifically for games.  Let me know if I should go into more detail or would want a tutorial on other things.

2D Character Tutorial

Other tutorials I plan on doing: Backgrounds, making eye catching icons, walk/run cycles, explosions etc...

i like tutorials like this, helps to see how other peoples work flow. One question is though, do you use strokes/outlines? or just fills?

I mainly use fills.  I don't like line tools usually because you can't get varied thickness or sharpness with them.  When you have complex shapes, it's also hard to make the outline look good, in my opinion.

Like here, there's some variety in stroke which I prefer.  Also when exporting your image, if you're working with tight assets and want to shave off as much blank space as possible, Flash doesn't care about the thickness of your lines, it just looks at the points.  So you might end up with assets that are cut up at the edges.

I ask, cause recently we made a game where tiles had to line up, and we were using vector graphics. Some of these tiles had line strokes, and when we tried to line them up, even though we put in exact widths/heights and positions some of them still occasionally had little gaps (especially when scrolling).  So we moved to having only fills and seems to work a lot nicer.

Yes, having line strokes will give you problems when exporting raster image and spritesheets.  No matter how precise you measure the stroke, flash doesn't read it as taking up any pixel space.

Some tricks you can do is drawing a box behind your asset with 0% opacity and make sure your stroke is within that box.  When you export it this way, flash will read the box as a fill, even though it's blank.

Glad it's helpful.  I want to make more of them, but doubt I can whip them up regularly.  Doing one now about title screens and hopefully I can upload it soon.

How to Make Game Icons

In this one, I'll talk through examples of icons made in other games, some good, some bad.  Examples I've done and then a short tutorial on my process.

Quick concepts for characters in a shooter.  The yellow guy is actually a cyborg.  He blew his limbs off from using too many explosives.  Green guy is full on robot.
