I've been following FGA for a while now and to me it doesn't seem that useful or at least not as populated as it should be to be useful, I had a few commissions but that only from the forum so I'm staring this thread, my "sketchbook" thread. I think it will be great for some exposure and also get some feedback in ideas :). So let me treat you to some older artwork (by old I mean a couple of weeks).

A level selection map for a puzzle game called Tile Factory done as a commission (this is just a bit of the total artwork, but I really like this piece since it reminds me of Samurai Jack):

A monster design, part as a sample on a possible commision:

Now for some of my own stuff meant for games:

Character design for a game and adventure/point and click game:

And after a few sketches time for some nice clean lines

My latest project is an avoider game as a general theme, and here are some sketches:

(For some reason I had to post again to show the last image)

And after I tried to make the UFO in flash I got so mad because it's just didn't look good that I decided not only to sketch the character on paper but to draw it on paper as close as possible to what I wanted it to look before I made another attempt in flash

So feel free to comment or tear appart my art :).

I like the monster, can I hug him and take him home?

And love your pencil color works, why not scan, edit, and use it in the game instead? :)

Well I had that thought to, but it doesn't fit in what style that I have in mind and I would also need to make sprites for every animation so that it looks good (no animation from code). I might use this style for something else in the future.

That all looks really nice @PIXELCHUNK the robot rocket space pig is an intriguing character Laughing

I especially like the expressions you got on the male character design sketches - one of my future projects will be a P&C adventure so I'll add your handle to the design document and (eventually) get in touch!

One thing that seems to be severely lacking generally from artists on FGA is examples of GUI work.  I have an open project (aztec god game) which I wanted to buy GUI art for but so far I haven't had a bid that shows good GUI graphics... I've done it myself in the meantime but now I'm getting the expected complaints about some parts of it that look rubbish.

I think most artists give examples of their great drawing abilities and feel that GUI is pretty trivial, however there is a huge difference between some grey-scale gradient filled rounded buttons (yuk! please stop doing that!) and a really effective GUI which integrates all the game controls in an overall theme that fits the game.

Do you do small commissions like the GUI for games?  Got any examples? Wink

Nice! I like the way you draw pixelchunk, very cartoony. You can be a cartoon artist of Disney! :) Keep it up!

Ok, so after talking to pjbaron I decided to do a little sample for the GUI, let's see if he likes it and let's find out if guys like it or not. I especially like the south american motifs.

@PIXELCHUNK your art is great, I think you have a great talent at drawing, I like your style and how you can expose the characters mood that´s a hard part for me when I draw although I´m still learning drawing techniques. That sample fot the GUI is good, keep your good talent growing.

@Mushyrulez actually the inspiration for the character was an photo of paper boy from around 1920.

So I've talked pjbaron and he asked me to help with the GUI of Aztec God Game, and here is an update on my work. These are buttons for the game (spells, commands, etc) a mana metter, and a preloader.

Any comments ?

Those look awesome PIXELCHUNK!

One minor thing, which could just be down to my weird taste of colour, is that I feel the coloured in dragon doesn't quite seem right with the blue striped bar across it. Maybe it would look better if it had some sort of border around the bar that "cut" out and left a sort of transparent border around it. Or even turning the dragon black and white or some sort of stone colour and have the bar "carved" into it. Although that's just a minor change I would personally make.

But nice work on the little symbols, I really like them.

-- Edit --

I'm sorry about editing your work, do tell me if you want me to remove this, but I thought it may be the best way to show you what I meant :)

I'm very happy with what I'm seeing!  This should really up the quality of the game - it definitely will have been worth taking the time to get it done professionally!

I really like the colours in the mana bar dragon, but I also like the thin double border around the bar that you've added @James A.  I wonder if PIXELCHUNK could do a quick test and see if they work together?

@ James A, you color scheme is not bad, but I don't try to use the things I like always (you shouldn't to). Here I looked at the folk art of the feathered serpent god and the colors used are the traditional ones, I'm trying to keep the art in context.

I agree, you shouldn't always do things they way you like... but the majority of the time I think you should! I like the feeling of self satisfaction when I finish a piece of work, so if it wasn't to my taste I wouldn't really get that. That said, you're doing this work for someone else and I think you've done a really great job.

The traditional colours are nice, I think it was the "bar" I had a little problem with. Maybe add the border to it with your coloured design so it stands out a little more.

I don't want to see as though I'm complaining and bringing you down, I'm just trying to be helpful. But keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

i love the dragon!

i think whats wrong with the bar is that it has a different stylisation than the dragon, for me it looks too sci-fi
